Onions are naturally low in calories and are a natural source of essential nutrients and antioxidants which provide important health benefits.
One important antioxidant is quercetin, which is more abundant in onions than in other fruits and vegetables such as spinach, tomatoes or broccoli. Additional antioxidants in onions are vitamin C and the sulfur containing compounds responsible for its flavor.

It is believed that cut onions attract germs & bacteria very fast.
According to an old theory, to bring relief from flu, before sleeping, one must cut 2 slices of onion & place one on each foot, & then cover the feet with plain cotton socks. It is believed that in the morning the onion will have turned black due to bacteria & the person's fever would be gone or reduced.
TRY IT.....no harm in trying this age old remedy!!!
To dodge the flu during flu season, buy some onions and place them in bowls around your home. If you work at a desk, place one or two in your office or under your desk or even on top somewhere. Try it and see what happens. People who did this claim they never got the flu.
Another method in an article stated: Cut both ends off an onion, put one end on a fork and then place the forked end into an empty jar...placing the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said that the onion would be black in the morning from the germs & the patient begins to feel better.

Medical experts. Dr Joe Schwarcz of McGill University's Office for Science and Society explains: Onions have a variety of sulphur compounds that have antibacterial activity. Furthermore, cutting an onion triggers the release of enzymes that initiate a chemical reaction producing propenesulfenic acid, which in turn decomposes to yield sulphuric acid. It is the sulphuric acid that makes you cry by irritating the eyes! But sulphuric acid also inhibits the growth of bacteria. Also, a cut onion's surface dries out quickly, reducing the moisture that is needed for bacteria to multiply.
